Tired of hearing about Deb’s dogs? Well, this episode isn’t going to solve that problem, but it may provide a great resource for anyone with a pet! Everyone loves a good dog, but not everyone appreciates the hard work and dedication it takes to get one. According to Emily Herr, Outreach Coordinator for the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter & Trainer at Bloomington Canine Services, training is like a dance- one person always has to be in the lead! That’s why Emily recently launched Bloomington Canine Services, an in home training service offered to Monroe and surrounding counties. Emily provides practical, customized solutions for behavioral issues so pets and their people can live happier lives. The City of Bloomington Animal Shelter is an Open Door Shelter, meaning they won’t turn away ANY animal. They also provide daily enrichment for every animal at the shelter. Emily and other shelter staff and volunteers are seeing these animals at what might be the lowest point of their lives and tailor a care plan to meet their specific needs. By treating behavioral problems as a medical issue, the shelter is able to give a leg up (pun intended) to an animal that was previously thought of as hopeless. This model is now being used to help other shelters create programming that’s geared more towards taking the necessary steps to acclimate these animals before being adopted out.
