Every year, abused and neglected children are placed in foster care because they are unable to live safely at home. Imagine what it would be like to lose your parents, not because of something you did, but because they cannot or will not take care of you. And then, into these children’s lives come dozens of strangers: police, foster parents, therapists, social workers, judges, lawyers and more. Hopefully, one of these strangers is a CASA Volunteer. CASA Volunteers watch over and advocate for these abused and neglected children to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. CASA Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home.
For many children, their CASA is a constant adult presence and is the one who advocates for them. CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court.
Our volunteers are professionally trained to gather information about the child and his/her family, identify needs and services, speak on behalf of the child in court, monitoring court orders and case plans to make sure that the case is moving forward. Responsibilities include meeting with the child monthly, talking with case managers, parents and foster parents, as well as writing reports for and attending court hearings.
